What have we done while on patrol?
- Discovered fires – in trash dumpsters at the American Legion Building, the Aldan Swim Club, the Aldan Elementary School, the Aldan Colonial Playhouse, and at the Jefferson Apartments (across from the train station in Clifton Heights); also discovered numerous grass fires before they spread.
- Observed and interrupted vandalism to cars, houses and businesses. - Once, we even watched a teen spray paint a Flyers logo on the shed at the school grounds. He thanked us for giving him more light with our headlights. He wasn’t thanking us three minutes later when the police arrived.
- Alerted police to break-ins and burglaries.
- Notified police of disorderly groups.
- Assisted in looking for lost children.
- Located suspects wanted by police. - We found one person hiding along the railroad tracks behind houses on Maryland Avenue and another guy lying on the ground behind the hedges at Providence and Woodlawn.
- Helped motorists with car troubles – from breakdowns to dead batteries.
- Found drivers in trouble – one unconscious turned out to be in diabetic shock.
- Reported drunk drivers. - During one patrol, we spotted a car that was swerving from one side of the road to the other. As we continued to update our base operator with his location, we followed him east on Providence Road to Lansdowne Avenue. The operator notified the police who were able to set up a road block and arrest him. (He actually fell out of the car when they opened his door!)
- Assisted police with traffic directions at accidents and fires.
- Added special daytime patrols (noon to 4) in 1986 in response to a wave of daytime robberies.
